The Role of a Laser Hair Removal Treatment and Pilonidal Sinus Disease

Laser hair removal is more than a treatment for removing hair for aesthetic reasons. It can actually be quite beneficial for skin infections like Pilonidal Sinus Disease. If you are unfamiliar with this disease, or you are experiencing it yourself and are looking into ways to treat it, please read on!

What is Pilonidal Sinus Disease?

Pilonidal Disease is a chronic skin infection where a nest of hair becomes trapped under the skin in the crease of the buttocks near the tailbone. This area can lead to an abscess (a swollen mass) and develop into a cyst. It is estimated that 26 per 100,000 people in the second and third decades of their life are affected by this infection. The infection is also more likely to occur in men than in women.

What Are the Causes and Symptoms

The cause of this condition is unclear. However, it is believed that factors including changing hormones, hair growth, friction from clothes and spending a long time sitting may be the cause. Hair often grows around the cleft between the buttocks. Friction from activities such as sitting can force the hair in this area to burrow back under the skin. The body considers the hair a foreign substance, and as a reaction, creates a cyst around the hair.

Varying symptoms include:

  • Reddened, sore skin in the area
  • Pain when sitting down
  • Pus or blood draining from the affected area
  • Foul smell from draining pus

Laser Hair Removal Treatment

There are several surgical treatments available for this skin infection. Patients may receive antibiotics to treat the infection, and surgery to drain the pus or remove the cyst is also an option. Unfortunately, the chance of repeated infection is quite common, so it is often recommended by doctors to shave or use treatments like laser hair removal to keep the affected area free of hair.

Laser hair removal is a safe procedure that uses a narrowly focused laser beam directed at the hair follicle. This beam produces heat to damage the follicle to the point that it can no longer produce hair. We recommend 6 to 8 sessions to slow down the growth of the hair until it eventually stops growing altogether. At Simply Laser, we use Cynosure Laser, Alex and Nd:YAG, for our laser hair removal treatment. Research has shown that laser hair removal can significantly reduce the occurrence rate of the infection in patients compared to those who did not undergo any hair removal treatment. The Nd:YAG has been proven to be an effective laser choice by penetrating deeper into the hair follicle without damaging or burning the skin.

A laser hair removal treatment can be done in a day, with repeated sessions every six weeks.
