Need to Remove Sun Spots?

EFFECTIVE LASER TREATMENT FOR PIGMENTATION REMOVAL

Do you keep finding spots that are becoming more and more noticeable on your skin? Are sun spots and age spots affecting your skin tone?
What causes Pigmentation?

Ageing and repeated exposure to the sun (UV rays), causes the melanin-producing cells to lose their ability to distribute pigment evenly, resulting in dark spots and blotches that appear on the skin. Dark skin spots, freckles, blotches and uneven tanning are all examples of pigmentation. This occurs primarily in areas that have most exposure to sun, including face, neck, and hands.

Pregnancy and even the use of the contraceptive pill can also instigate pigmentation. The increased levels of oestrogen during these times can trigger melanin producing hormones, which leads to the development of these darker skin spots.

HOW DO YOU TREAT SKIN PIGMENTATION?

At Simply Laser we have treatment options suitable for all skin tones.
The Alexandrite laser is used on lighter skin types. This laser utilises a specific wavelength of energy to safely target these pigmented spots, without affecting the surrounding normal skin. Thermo-lo (Radio Frequency) is used to treat darker skin types -please see removal of Skin Imperfections for more details.
These treatments can be used to improve pigmentation, freckles, spots and sun damaged skin.

There are many forms of pigmentation. A skin consultation with our Certified Laser Specialist will help determine your specific type and assess suitability for pigmentation treatment.

WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT FEEL LIKE?

The treatment takes about 20-30 minutes and causes only a mild discomfort which is easily alleviated with an air cooling system.
According to most clients it is like having a small rubber band snapped on the skin. Our machines are paired with a unique cooling device, which cools the skin on contact, making the treatment comfortable.
If for any reason you are very sensitive and the pain is intolerable, there are topical anaesthetic creams that can be used.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER MY TREATMENT?

Directly after your pigmentation removal treatment, your skin may be slightly red and hot like you’ve suffered a mild sunburn. This may be followed by a slight swelling in the treated area. The swelling could last up to 12 hours and can be treated with a cold ice compress.
Micro crusting (flat scabbing)which appear as darker skin spots may occur within 24 hours. This is the first sign of healing, and will take 10 days to 2 weeks to slough off, revealing a clearer complexion.
You will be able to resume your normal activities the following day and foundation will easily mask any darkened spots.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Most people will require 2-3 pigmentation removal treatments spaced 3 weeks apart to achieve optimal results.
However it is still an individual process and depends on the depth and type of pigment.
Some will notice a 50% reduction in colour just after one treatment!

ARE THERE ANY RISKS OR SIDE EFFECTS WITH LASER?

Certain medications may affect your laser pigmentation removal treatment if they are photosensitive (such as Roaccutane and Retin A) which can cause pigmentation. If you are taking any medications it is best to inform your Laser Specialist so they can ensure the best possible treatment results for you.

ARE THERE ANY PRE OR POST CARE INSTRUCTIONS WITH THE PIGMENTATION REMOVAL TREATMENT?

Pre treatment:

Avoid the use of any retinoid, glycolic acid or any astringents a week before your pigmentation removal treatment.
Limit Sun exposure and solarium use for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment (apply SPF 30 + sunscreen daily on areas being treated).
Treatment within 2 weeks of active tanning (natural sunlight and/or tanning booth) may result in hypo-pigmentation (white spots) that may not clear for several months.
Do not apply a topical fake tan 1 week prior to treatment. This may be reapplied as soon as the treatment area is healed.

Post treatment:

Avoid sun exposure for a few days after the treatment to reduce the chance of any light or dark spots appearing. Although these marks are only superficial they may take a few months to disappear. Use SPF 30+ or higher throughout the course of treatment.
Avoid anything that will make the treatment area hot directly after your treatment. This includes hots baths, sun and excessive exercise.
Avoid the use of any retinoid, glycolic acid or any astringents for at least 24 hours after your treatment.
Avoid swimming pools or spas with chlorine and chemicals directly after your treatment.
You can wear foundation after the treatment but avoid scratching or exfoliating the treated areas or you may cause scarring.
