What Are The Best Treatments For Teenage Acne?

Acne is often a major concern for many teenagers. Teenage acne is not just painful, but it can seriously affect your self-esteem and start you down a long journey of trial and error with skincare products and medications, further exacerbating skin problems and the likelihood of scarring. At Simply Laser, we have exclusive acne programs and treatment options that effectively fight all types of acne.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACNE

Acne can occur anywhere on your body and appear as any of the following:

  • Pustules – spots that contain pus (a classic pimple)
  • Papules – small pink dome-shaped bumps
  • Blackheads – small, open comedones filled with excess oil and dead skin cells (black in colour)
  • Whiteheads – closed comedones filled with excess oil and dead skin cells (white in colour)
  • Large cysts – pus-filled lesions that look similar to boils

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF ACNE?

Sebum, an oily substance produced by your sebaceous glands, provides your skin with that luminous dewy glow that keeps your skin refreshed and healthy. Acne develops when the hair follicles in your skin become blocked with excess sebum (oil underneath the surface of the skin) and dead skin cells.

While the exact cause of teenage acne is not clear, it is believed that hormones called androgens (responsible for causing excess sebum) play a role. As you go through puberty, both boys and girls experience a surge in androgens. This increase gives the skin an oilier appearance to the skin and traps bacteria, leading to acne. The amount of sebum produced can also fluctuate during a woman’s menstrual cycle, which is why some young women only experience breakouts at either end of their period.

Genetics also play a contributing role in the occurrence of acne, and a family may have a genetic tendency to overproduce sebum or dead skin cells. If only one parent experienced severe acne, your risk may be greatly reduced.

Other environmental factors, including the type of pillowcase you sleep on, or medications you may be taking, can also trigger teenage acne. Even the friction from your backpack can lead to breakouts on your back and shoulders. The list of potential irritants, allergens and diet factors that could be exaggerating teenage acne is long and tiresome. For instance, if a cosmetic or ingredient is comedogenic, it has a propensity to clog pores, which could lead to acne. What you want to look for is noncomedogenic skincare products.

If teenage acne is left unattended long enough, it can leave behind severe scarring that carries on well into adulthood.

OUR TEENAGE ACNE TREATMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

At Simply Laser, we can create an individualised teenage acne program for you, including in-clinic and at-home paramedical skincare products to get your skin back on track. We’ve taken all the hard work out for you and partnered with the best brands to make an effective acne program with products suited to your skin type.

IMAGE SKINCARE

Imagine Skincare is an Australian evidence-based clinical skincare brand that focuses on delivering products with highly active ingredients and the latest anti-aging technology. We stock a range of their products for you to take home and offer in-clinic chemical peels to treat all types of acne. The Acne Lift chemical peel uses a combination of BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids) and AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), along with other anti-inflammatory agents to unclog pores and heal acne lesions. We recommend booking a consultation appointment with one of our estheticians to discuss which chemical peel is best suited to your needs and skin type.

DMK

Danné Montague-King, or DMK, is another paramedical skincare brand with a diverse range of products and treatments for all skin types. DMK’s four core principles are to remove, rebuild, protect and maintain, with a focus on matching an individual’s biochemistry with the appropriate skin therapy. For acne-prone skin, we recommend DMK’s signature Enzyme Therapy Facial to oxygenate and detoxify the skin.

DERMAPEN SKIN NEEDLING

Our Dermapen Skin Needling treatment involves a microneedling device that gently punctures the skin to stimulate collagen, increasing your skin’s ability to repair itself. This process will work to reduce acne scarring, enlarged pores and blackheads. It is also a great treatment for reducing the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation, and improving the skin’s overall texture.

SIMPLY LASER ACNE TREATMENT PACKAGE

We have a highly effective acne treatment program that is ideal for treating teenage acne. This package includes multiple Image Skincare peels, DMK Enzyme Therapy Facial and Dermapen sessions, as well as a DMK Acne Pack containing five home care products. All the guesswork, research, trial and error are no longer on your to-do list when you book an acne treatment consultation with us.
